Ectoplasm was considered genuine evidence of life beyond the grave. Something you could see and touch. The supernatural made physical.
The concept appeared in the late 19th and early 20th centuries during the height of spiritualism, when séances were a social event and darkness was thought to help the dead feel more at home. Mediums would sit in trance while their bodies supposedly produced a strange white substance. It came from their mouths, their noses, and in some cases areas I'm not going to specify on a family adjacent blog.
Witnesses swore it was the fabric of the spirit world pushed into ours through human flesh. Photographs from the era show people slumped in half-conscious states, thin sheets of material spilling from their faces like laundry that had somewhere to be. The effect is unsettling even now. Not because it looks real. Because it doesn't.

Investigators started taking samples. Most turned out to be cheesecloth. Egg whites. Tissue paper. The Cambridge University Library holds a specimen labeled ectoplasm in the archives of the Society for Psychical Research, a piece of fine muslin attributed to the medium Helen Duncan. It is a historical artifact. It is not, by any scientific measure, evidence of anything except a woman with cheesecloth and an audience.
These days the word has mostly left ghost hunting vocabulary. Which is a mistake in my opinion. The absence of credible historical samples doesn't mean the phenomenon doesn't exist. It means the people producing it in the 1890s were mostly frauds. Those are different problems.
Dr. Corbin Latch, our spiritual advisor, once told me that ectoplasm may in fact be an ectogenic ejaculate emission. He did not elaborate. He is a respected man and I did not push him on it.
What people still report, and I take these accounts seriously, is something adjacent to the old descriptions. A heaviness in the air after an encounter. A static cling feeling on the skin. A pressure that lingers after the presence has gone. In these accounts ectoplasm isn't a substance. It's a residue. What gets left on you when something brushes too close.
There are practitioners who go further. They say ectoplasm is matter borrowed from the other side, raw spiritual material that powerful entities use to project forms into this world. Some claim certain people can produce or shape it themselves, that it evaporates quickly once the energy behind it drains away. These people are called ectomancers. I have met one. I have questions about the meeting that I have not resolved.
Ectoplasm removal is $3. Half off during our holiday sale. We don't ask how it got there and we mean that.
There is no historical evidence that ectoplasm is real. There is no historical evidence that a lot of things are real. That has never been a barrier for what's actually out there.
