DEMON BABY

The property manager called us. Not the tenant. The property manager. A man who owns apartment buildings and has heard every excuse for breaking a lease. He let her out of her contract without a fee.

That's the detail that got my attention.

We met the tenant before going in. She'd initially thought her son was climbing into bed with her at night. The weight of a small body. A child's warmth. It wasn't her son. She described what she eventually saw. Small figure. Head rotating. The voice came from it in a register she felt in her chest before she heard it with her ears. She was very still when she told us this.

The apartment has a Victorian fireplace with a Green Man carved into the mantle. Horned foliage face. Pagan in origin. It's been above that fireplace since the building was built and nobody had thought much about it until now.

Bryan's equipment went active the moment we walked in and stayed that way. We ran the spirit box. What came through was clear. The spirit wanted to leave. It kept saying the same thing differently. It needed to exit through the green gate.

We looked around. Then we found it. The bathroom mirror had a subtle green tint. Old glass. Oxidized silver backing. Green enough to be the gate if you were looking for it.

We addressed the mirror directly. Commanded the spirit through it. The readings dropped within four minutes.

The new tenants have reported nothing. Case resolved. The Green Man is still above the fireplace doing whatever the Green Man does.

The demon baby I think about more than I'll say here. Something that understood that a child is what she would reach for. That's not residual behavior. That's calculation.

I'm not afraid of what was in that apartment. I just haven't stopped thinking about the voice she described.
