LADY IN WHITE
The Prince of Wales Hotel sits on a hill above Waterton Lakes in southern Alberta, looking out over the kind of landscape that makes you feel small in a way that is probably good for you. It was built in 1927. It has been home to several disembodied souls for most of that time.
We arrived in September while the hotel was closed for the season. A man at a local gas station, the kind of man who clearly knows things, mentioned that one of the balcony doors on an upper floor might be unlocked. We went to find out.
The hotel was dark. No staff. No guests. Just us and the wind and floors that creaked in ways that felt like the building was deciding something about us. There was a single light on in one room somewhere above. We avoided that room. We had a destination. Room 510. We had a person to find.
Sarah worked at the hotel in its early years. She fell in love with a man who did not love her back. Heartbroken, she jumped from the fourth floor mezzanine into the lobby below. She has been in the hotel ever since, most often near Room 510, most often in a white dress. The hotel manager confirmed that Room 510 has frightened enough guests into requesting room changes that it has become a known situation rather than an isolated incident.
As we approached the mezzanine the air changed. Wrong in a specific way. Heavy. The feeling of being watched while doing something you are not supposed to be doing, which we were. One team member reported feeling confusingly aroused. They have asked for anonymity. We are respecting that.
I looked into the shower of one of the upper floor rooms. I heard something. A whisper. Something that may have been a figure in white at the edge of what the camera could see. The camera did not capture it. The room did not need a camera to make its point.
We ran. All of us. For what felt like a significant distance. The air outside felt different against our faces. We were changed by what happened in there and I am comfortable putting that in writing.
Sarah is still in Room 510. We left her there. Some of the Spooky Boys want to go back and stay overnight. Others do not. The conversation is ongoing.
