ZOOM H1N AUDIO RECORDER

Audio recording is important.

This is the Zoom H1n. It is small enough to fit in a jacket pocket which is where it usually is. What it captures in that pocket during an active investigation is a separate matter.

Operation is straightforward. Power switch on the left side. Press the red record button once to arm it. The input levels appear on the screen. Press it again to start recording. When the session is done, press stop. The file saves automatically to the SD card. That part is simple.

What is not simple is what ends up on the SD card.

The Spooky Boys run the H1n at 24-bit 96kHz WAV. Uncompressed. The highest resolution the unit supports. This matters because EVP, electronic voice phenomena, the voices and sounds that do not have a physical source in the room, tend to occupy frequency ranges and amplitude levels that compressed audio formats eliminate before you ever hear them. At 24-bit 96kHz nothing gets removed. Everything that was in the room when the recorder was running is on that file. Everything.

Input gain between 70 and 80. Low cut filter off. Limiter off. Let the recorder hear what is there without the device deciding what is and isn't worth keeping.

The H1n has been present at every Spooky Boys investigation since we acquired it. The files are archived. Most of them have been reviewed. Not all of the reviewed files have been filed in the public record. The ones that haven't are the ones that required more time to process than we have had.

The things this little recorder has heard cannot be explained.

And will not be explained at this moment.
